Distracted Kansas biker crashes into poker run pack

Two slightly different perspectives of a crash during a scheduled Republic County, Kansas, poker run pointed to an at-fault motorcycle operator. The mother of one of the people hospitalized in the injury accident and a county sheriff's deputy agreed the motorcyclist wasn't attentive to the surrounding traffic conditions.

The motorcycle collision took place as a pack of almost three dozen bikes was making its way along Kansas Highway 148. The group of riders was followed by a limousine occupied by event organizers, including the mother of the 20-year-old man who allegedly caused the accident.

The mother, a Republic County hospital nurse, reported that her son didn't notice the pack of motorcycle riders had slowed to pass over a railroad crossing. The young man, with a 23-year-old passenger, plowed through the group knocking off several bike mirrors. The motorcycle apparently struck another bike, throwing all the motorcycles and riders to the ground.

A sheriff's deputy said the motorcycle operator passed several bikes on the rural road and crashed while trying to work his way back into the pack. None of the accident victims or the poker run participants was wearing helmets, which are only mandatory for riders younger than 18.

The man on the second motorcycle was slightly hurt and treated at the scene by an EMT. Three nurses, the mother of one of the injured among them, were among the witnesses who attended to the remaining victims until help arrived.

The deputy said "road rash" was the worst of the injuries. The motorcycle operator's mother said her son and his passenger also suffered back pain.

Sometimes injuries seem minor at the time of an accident. A back injury could cause temporary muscle soreness or lead to larger health problems like nerve or spinal damage, which could cause disability. A personal injury claim following an accident caused by negligence helps victims recover financially. Compensated damages may include scarring, extended medical treatment and wage loss.
